Zimmermann/Zimmerin EFZ
Key facts
- Qualification
- Federal VET Diploma (EFZ)
- Length
- 4 years
You build with wood: roof structures, whole houses, stairs and facades, from the workshop to the roof.
What you do
Timber construction carpenters build roof structures, wooden houses, extensions, stairs and facades. In the workshop you cut and shape beams and panels, often with computer-controlled machines. On the building site you put up the prepared parts and fit them together, often high up.
What you bring
- Enjoying wood as a material and working outside
- A head for heights and sure footing
- Good spatial awareness
- Good marks in maths and geometry
How the apprenticeship works
The apprenticeship takes four years. You work in the workshop and on building sites, go to vocational school and attend industry courses.
Tip: Timber construction is in demand because wood grows back and stores CO2. That is why carpenters are needed.
And afterwards
After the apprenticeship you can train further to become a team leader, site foreman or master carpenter. At a college of higher education you can become a wood technology technician, and with the vocational baccalaureate you can study wood technology.
