You are the host: you welcome guests, advise them, serve them and make sure they have a lovely evening.
What you do
In the restaurant you are there for the guests. You lay tables, greet guests, recommend food and drinks, take orders, serve and handle payment. You make coffee and drinks, give advice on wines and help organise banquets or celebrations.

- Enjoying being with people, and a friendly manner
- Staying calm and keeping track, even when every table wants something at the same time
- Stamina, because you are on the move a lot
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends
Tip: Foreign languages help a lot in service. If you can say a few sentences to guests from all over the world in their own language, you make a good impression.
How the apprenticeship works
The apprenticeship takes three years. You work in the restaurant or hotel, go to vocational school and attend industry courses. There is also a two-year way in: restaurant assistant (EBA).
And afterwards
With this apprenticeship you can also work abroad. After the apprenticeship you can become head of service, run a bar, train further with professional exams or attend a hotel management school.
