Polymechaniker/in EFZ

Key facts

Qualification
Federal VET Diploma (EFZ)
Length
4 years

You make precise parts for machines, program CNC machines and assemble whole machines.

What you do

Polymechanics work in industry. You mill, turn and grind parts, often accurate to a hundredth of a millimetre. You program computer-controlled machines, assemble components and systems, put them into operation and maintain them.

What you bring

  • Enjoying technology and making things with your hands
  • Good spatial awareness, because you read technical drawings
  • Good marks in maths and physics
  • Precision and patience

How the apprenticeship works

The apprenticeship takes four years. At the start you often learn the basics in a training workshop, later you work in production, assembly or design. On top of that there is vocational school and industry courses. A shorter alternative is production mechanic (EFZ), which takes three years.

Tip: During your taster placement, ask which departments you go through during the apprenticeship. In large companies you can later specialise in what suits you best.

And afterwards

Polymechanics is a good start for many technical careers: technician at a college of higher education, workshop supervisor or, with the vocational baccalaureate, a degree in mechanical engineering or mechatronics at a university of applied sciences.
