Construction and crafts

Maurer/in EFZ

Key facts

Qualification
Federal VET Diploma (EFZ)
Length
3 years

You build houses, walls and foundations, work outside in a team and see every day what you have achieved.

What you do

Bricklayers work on building sites. You read plans, build walls from brick or sand-lime brick, set up formwork, lay reinforcement and pour concrete. On renovations you knock down old walls and build new ones. In the evening you can see what you and your team have achieved.

What you bring

  • Enjoying physical work and working outdoors
  • Practical skills and a good eye for measurements
  • Good marks in maths, to calculate sizes and quantities
  • Team spirit, because nobody works alone on a building site

How the apprenticeship works

The apprenticeship takes three years. You work on building sites, go to vocational school and attend industry courses at a training centre. There is also a two-year way in: bricklayer (EBA).

Tip: During your taster placement, ask whether you would work more on new buildings or on renovations. Everyday work is very different.

And afterwards

In construction you can work your way up well. Many become team leaders, later site foremen and, with the advanced federal exam, master builders. A college of higher education in construction management or, with the vocational baccalaureate, a degree in civil engineering is also possible.
