You develop software or make sure servers, networks and devices run reliably.
What you do
In application development you write programs: websites, apps or software the company needs. You plan, code, test and improve. In platform development you look after the technology behind it: servers, networks, the cloud, workstations and security.
In both specialisations you work a lot in a team, talk with the people who need your solution and explain technology so that they can understand it.
What you bring
- Enjoying cracking problems and keeping at it when something does not work straight away
- Logical thinking and good marks in maths
- English, because a lot of documentation and error messages are in English
- Patience and care: a small mistake can cause a lot of trouble
Tip: You do not need to know how to code before the apprenticeship. But if you have already tried something, a small game, a website or a script, you can show it well in the interview.
How the apprenticeship works
The apprenticeship takes four years. You work in the company, go to vocational school and attend industry courses. Many ICT apprentices do the vocational baccalaureate during the apprenticeship.
And afterwards
ICT specialists are in demand. After the apprenticeship you can specialise with federal exams, attend a college of higher education or, with the vocational baccalaureate, study computer science at a university of applied sciences.
