You support them with washing, dressing and eating, measure blood pressure and pulse, prepare medication, change bandages and watch how they are doing. Keeping records and agreeing things with the team are also part of the job.
You work in a hospital, a care home for older people, a clinic or for Spitex, the service that looks after people in their own homes.
What you bring
- Enjoying being with people, even when they are not doing well
- Empathy and a calm manner
- No fear of physical contact, and good health
- Willingness to work shifts and sometimes at weekends
Tip: If you can, do taster placements in two places, for example in a hospital and in a care home. Everyday work is very different.
How the apprenticeship works
The apprenticeship takes three years. You work in the company, go to vocational school and learn practical skills in industry courses before you use them with patients.
And afterwards
Healthcare specialists are urgently needed. Many healthcare assistants go on to a college of higher education to become a registered nurse. With the vocational baccalaureate you can also study at a university of applied sciences, for example nursing, physiotherapy or nutrition.
