You advise customers, keep the shelves full and tidy and know your products better than anyone.
What you do
In retail you are where people shop: in a grocery store, a sports shop, a bookshop, an electronics store or a boutique. You advise customers, receive goods, stock the shelves, arrange displays and work at the till. More and more often, the online shop and orders are part of it too.
What you bring
- Enjoying contact with people, including difficult ones
- Interest in the products of your sector
- A neat appearance and a friendly manner
- Stamina, because you are on your feet a lot
Tip: Choose a sector that really interests you. Someone who loves bikes gives advice in a bike shop with a lot more conviction.
How the apprenticeship works
The apprenticeship takes three years. You work in the shop, go to vocational school and attend industry courses for your sector. If school is harder for you, retail assistant (EBA) is a good two-year way in.
And afterwards
With some experience, many become deputy manager of a branch and later branch manager. With professional exams you can train further in sales, purchasing or marketing.
